AEVIT® Gas / Brake and Steering Systems

When Using the Factory Controls is not an Option

All AEVIT® systems operating the vehicle acceleration/braking and steering controls, share the same components. The only difference between the systems is the “plug & play” Input Device(s) that you will use. Each of the systems or “Series” listed on this page will contain these standard components:

  • Drive Modules (2)
  • Vehicle Interface Module
  • Steering Servo
  • Accel/Braking Servo
  • Associated Wiring

  • J-Series

The J-Series input device is a Gas, Brake & Steering system that utilizes a multi-axis joystick input device. Motion in the X-axis is for Steering and the Y-axis motion is for Gas & Brake. The exposed height of the joystick is approximately 4.25″ and an angular displacement, or range, of only 50 degrees is required to move the input from the full left steer position to full right steer or from the full gas position to full brake. As with all AEVIT® Gas & Brake systems, the Gas & Brake input direction can be programmed to be either gas forward or brake forward. The mechanism is extremely low-effort, requiring a maximum input force of only 0.2 lbs, and is internally spring-loaded to return to the center, or null, position. The joystick is coupled to two independent 3-channel potentiometers (one is for Gas & Brake and the other is for Steering). Each potentiometer provides three discrete input position signals to its respective drive module.

The J-Series input device can be positioned for either left hand or right hand operation. The input control enclosure measures 7.0” x 4.5” x 2.5” and weighs only 3.0 lbs. The software within the system provides four (4) unique control algorithms developed by EMC specifically for joystick steering. These allow “on-screen” programming in the Information Center by the dealer and evaluator to maximize the clients input strength and range of motion. In addition to the control algorithms, the AEVIT® joystick steering systems also incorporates software to reduce the speed of the output servomotor as the speed of the vehicle increases. This feature is designed to reduce over-steering scenarios at high speeds.

    WJ-Series

The WJ-Series is a Gas, Brake & Steering system that features a unique input device introduced with the release of AEVIT®. It is a single console with a joystick constrained to motion only in the Y-axis for Gas & Brake mounted on the left, and a 4.5″ miniature wheel for Steering on the right.
As for the wheel, the mechanics are exactly the same as the W-Series, but the diameter of the wheel is considerably smaller. The WJ-Series input control enclosure measures 12” x 7.5” x 2.5” and weights 6.3 lbs. This unique input device is designed specifically for clients with limited strength and range of motion, but good hand/finger dexterity.

    WL-Series

The WL-Series is a Gas, Brake & Steering system that utilizes the same wheel input device as the W-Series for Steering and the same lever input device as the L-Series for Gas & Brake. These input devices are designed to be mounted on each side of the driver. However, they are interchangeable so that the system can be tailored for right or left hand steering. The WL-Series utilizes a dual drive module configuration. One drive is for the Steering servomotor and one is for the Gas & Brake servomotor.

    WL-Series

The XL-Series is a Gas, Brake & Steering system that utilizes two separate control inputs. A joystick constrained to the X-axis (same as the X-Series) is used as the Steering input and a lever input device (same as the L-Series) is used for operation of the Gas & Brake.

    XY-Series

The XY-Series is a Gas, Brake & Steering system that utilizes two separate control inputs. A joystick input device constrained to motion in the X-axis is used for Steering (same as the X-Series) and a separate joystick input device constrained to motion in the Y-axis is for Gas & Brake (same as the Y-Series). This system is well suited for persons requiring joystick control but able to utilize dual input devices.

    WY-Series

The WY-Series is a Gas, Brake & Steering system that utilizes two separate control inputs. A wheel input device is provided for Steering (same as the W-Series) and a Y-axis joystick for Gas & Brake (same as the Y-Series). This dual drive module system is well suited for persons requiring extremely low-effort Gas & Brake control and a miniature low-effort steering wheel.

    Secondary Vehicle Controls

All vehicle functions other than steering, acceleration, and braking……are called secondary controls. To fully realize the capability of X-Wire, or “by-wire” control systems, many of these secondary controls such as ignition/start, wipers, turn signals, hi/lo beams, shifting, park brake, etc., must be operated in a more convenient manner. This may be due to the removal of the steering column and associated switches…..or possibly you require multiple, alternative ways of accessing those vehicle functions.

    Communicating with the Vehicle

The Gold Series Console incorporates all of the latest technologies to give you simple and convenient touch pad operation of nearly every secondary control function in the vehicle. Many custom applications are possible due to the multiplexing technology which makes communication with today’s modern vehicle electrical systems possible.

This innovative X-Wire product allows us to communicate with your vehicles “central nrevous system”, and allows us to passively interface with most OEM switches and vehicle data.

    Central Processing Unit

Utilizing “minimal fluid” LCD technology and priority sequencing, you can operate more functions than before. Electronic Shift and Park Brake are built in and the innovative VIC “Voice Interactive Controller” is available as a plug-in option. The most popular option available is the Remote Start. As with other EMC options, the Remote Start utilizes the circuits from the Gold Series, so just plug it in. No additional connections are required.
The standard functions that can be accessed with Gold Series include ignition, start, transmission shift functions (park, reverse, neutral & drive), front and rear fan speeds, parklight, headlight, dimmer, turn signals, hazard flashers, driver and passenger windows, door locks, cruise on & set, wiper speeds (intermittent, low and hi), wiper wash, park brake, dome light, horn and 3 Programmable auxiliary functions. Additionally, with the HVAC option, Gold Series offers access to the vehicle climate control functions (i.e. temperature, A/C clutch and air flow direction).

    LCD Screen

The Gold Series Touchpad consists of an LCD screen surrounded by lighted multi-function keys. The LCD screen indicates which functions can be accessed directly and also displays which functions are currently active. In addition, the main vehicle battery voltage is displayed at all times. The touchpad also acts as the programming interface to the CPU, as many of the Gold Series functions are programmable and may be tailored to suit your needs. As an example, you may opt to utilize the popular theft-deterrent security code requirement for starting the vehicle. Now that’s peace of mind!

    VIC

VIC stands for Voice Interactive Controls, and is used for “voice activation” of secondary controls, and to communicate instructions to the driver on the status of AEVIT “X-Wire” primary controls. VIC also has a programmable “flash card” reader built in so that all speech commands and instructions can be “custom tailored” in any language or format!

VIC will set new performance standards for truly “user friendly” access to important secondary controls while driving. Controls such as Shifter Functions, Turn Signals, Horn, Headlight Dimmer, Wipers, etc., can be accessed as easily as touching a single switch and speaking. When the switch is depressed, VIC will emit a ready tone. Speak into the newly designed flexible boom microphone the function you wish to activate, and VIC will do the rest within 1.5 seconds. In couldn’t be easier!

The circuitry inside VIC allows you to train the system to recognize your voice within minutes. Digital Speech Processing (DSP) technology allows us to incorporate software to reliably operate within the loud environment of a motor vehicle and minimize annoying “false activation”. Key features of VIC include “shift verification” commands to prevent unintentional shifting into Park or Reverse, and an automatic “radio defeat” function which mutes your stereo sound during system activation. This assures safe and reliable communications between you and VIC. VIC communicates across the X-Wire CANbus, and utilizes your vehicle speakers for sound. You can also adjust the volume level of VIC’s voice to your comfort level.

    Electronic Gearshift

Smart-Shift offers touch-button access to Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive. It even has a Drive 2 option that can be configured for low gear in most applications. Microprocessor Design incorporates positional feedback as well as fully automatic positioning of the actuator in any of the five gear selector choices, i.e., Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive and Drive 2. When a key is depressed, the actuator will move the transmission to the selected gear, stop automatically, and illuminate the LED ring indicator around the letter designator.

The Smart-Shift servomotor replaces the factory gearshift mechanism. The powerful actuator positions your factory transmission cable, and/or mechanical rod within 1/32″ every time – no missed shift points. It conveniently mounts near the transmission in a weatherproof enclosure out of sight! As a safety feature, the brake must be applied in order for the actuator to move to the desired gear. Each button is represented by universal icons so that a person can take full advantage of his or her visual perception for quick, at-a-glance operation. Also, these raised, tactile buttons are sufficiently spaced to prevent inadvertent function activation.

Smart-Shift can be installed into any vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission. It sets the industry standard for “Electronic Shift” applications. No more missed gears or waiting in traffic for the actuator to slowly move. Smart-Shift travels from Park to Drive in 1.3 seconds! In addition, the newly designed Smart-Shift no longer requires that you press and hold the desired key, simply press one time and the actuator moves to the desired gear automatically.

    Electronic Park Brake

The newly redesigned EMC Electronic Park Brake is an excellent and dependable replacement for the OEM mechanical Park Brake. The new design utilizes a combination of components which can output a force of more than 640 lbs. and is capable of fully applying the park brake in less than 3 seconds. The waterproof cast housing is designed to keep the internal components protected from the elements.

Electronic Park Brake can be used on any vehicle application. It can be operated from an EMC console system in the conventional way. In addition, it is standard equipment with the purchase of an AEVIT®> Gas & Brake control and is an integral part of the manual backup system in the unlikely event of total vehicle hydraulic brake failure. When used in conjunction with AEVIT®, it is automatically coupled to the lever or joystick input device. Whenever the input is moved to the “full brake” position, the park brake is accessed in a “momentary” fashion. Conversely, if the ignition of the vehicle is off, the AEVIT® input device can be used to “latch” the Electric Park Brake. All original vehicle dash indicators are retained operational, and the Gold Series icon will also indicate an activated state.

    Power Distribution

The Power Kit is designed to simplify the X-Wire equipment conversion process, by providing a central power distribution point inside of the vehicle. The Power Kit contains all of the necessary hardware and circuitry to safely transfer power from the main battery to multiple, fused 12Vdc constant hot and 12Vdc switched ignition outputs. This is particularly useful to the installer when complex electronic driving controls are utilized.

The Power Kit’s main features include, a 10A & 15A resetable circuit breaker, three 15A fused constant hot circuits, and four 10A fused switched ignition circuits. It also provides a junction point for the vehilce ECM speed and coil signals and is designed to filter out unwanted noise interference when used in conjunction with X-Wire.
Each Power Kit is supplied with a 100A@12Vdc, manual reset, circuit breaker mounted to a unique plastic (non-conductive)bracket. Simply remove one of the main vehicle battery terminals, slide this bracket over the battery post using one of the three supplied holes, and then reinstall the battery terminal. The circuit breaker is mounted and provides a handy location for connection to battery (+)12Vdc.
